The Degree is the Disruption: Remixing Teaching and Learning

Students entering college today will need to acquire and synthesize knowledge in entirely new ways to build expertise for professions that might not yet exist. With the advent of global connectivity, smart technologies, and new modes of communication —the world, as we know it, will be a very different place to live, work and play. Yet, our institutions of higher learning, mired in tradition and silos of disciplinary focus are not prepared to educate students to be successful advocates, critics, and contributors to a transdisciplinary, interconnected and rapidly evolving civilization.

To address this challenge, the University of Southern California has just launched The Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. The Academy will confer a new and unique undergraduate degree that nurtures innovation at the intersection of art and design, business and venture management, and engineering and computer science. In this presentation we will explore USC’s effort to remix teaching and learning, by challenging curricular design conventions, attracting a new breed of student, developing unique faculty support models, and creating educational technology solutions and learning environments that defy classroom precepts and practices.
