Dynamic Data Visualization of Rich Datasets

Title

Dynamic Data Visualization of Rich Datasets

Presenter

Abstract

With more than 100,000 citizen science observations submitted since 2006, the Globe at Night dataset covers the time domain, location, and both qualitative and quantitative data from around the world. Combining SQL queries with the power of a JavaScript library for drawing HTML5 charts and graphs enables dynamic data visualization of this rich dataset.

We have developed a Graphical User Interface to create configuration files for the various graphs and charts the library enables. This workshop will demonstrate how to use them. Come ready with your own dataset, and ideas for how you'd like to use it to create charts and graphs.

If there is time and interest, we will also look at the Google Maps API, and how that can be used with KMZ (zipped Keyhole Markup Language) files to create interactive maps for data exploration.
